ANC welcomes SA government’s withdrawal of support for Miss SA over ‘Israel’ boycott

Johannesburg (In Palestine Today)- The African National Congress (ANC) on Sunday issued a statement supporting a decision by South Africa’s government, withdrawing its support for Miss South Africa and the Miss South Africa organization after they insisted on participating in the Miss Universe pageant in the occupation state of Israel.

The ANC called on the Miss South Africa organization to withdraw noting that “the racism, human rights violations, illegal settlements, ongoing unlawful occupation and the apartheid laws of Israel are well documented and should be compelling enough for you withdrawal”.

The statement also highlighted the painful time that black South Africans went through when they were not allowed to participate in competitions under the miss South Africa title, however, they had to participate under the title “Miss Africa South”, which exposes the history of racism of the Miss SA trademark. The statement said such history even makes it more important to boycott the Miss Universe pageant.

“We and many others at the time called for the boycott of Miss World, just as Palestinians did on the 12th of November in a press statement released by Fatah calling for Miss South Africa to withdraw from Miss Universe”.

The ANC also criticized the Israeli assault against the South African senior official Lesiba Machaba while he was helping Palestinian farmers in picking olives. It added that such practices only make it more important that Miss South Africa and the Miss South Africa organization boycott the occupation state.
